Boat Gps and Chartplotter

Boat Gps and Chartplotter. Marine GPS units are revolutionizing boating. A global positioning system unit (GPS) is handy for both experienced and inexperienced boaters because it tracks the exact coordinates of a vessel when out in large bodies of water.

They help boaters navigate by using satellites to pinpoint the location of the GPS unit and comparing that to marine charts. The units can guide boats back into shore, get them to a new destination, find fish, or even map out the terrain under the water, notifying a boater if the water is getting shallow or a large rock is close by. Even the basic GPS systems provide smoother navigation by eliminating the need for maps and compasses.
The different features that marine GPS units can have are nearly endless which allows people to get a system that is tailored for their needs. This guide will help shoppers determine what GPS to purchase by discussing the 10 things to consider before buying a marine GPS unit.

Ten Things to Consider When Selecting a Marine GPS Unit

Which marine GPS unit to purchase is an important decision because the systems greatly improve water safety and the ease of navigation. Buyers can get very basic units or ones that are capable of doing everything but the steering. Before shopping, boaters should first determine what they need from a GPS by considering these 10 things:

1. How Many Satellites Does the Marine GPS Unit Use?

Marine GPS units need to use at least 12 satellites to function properly. However, the more satellites used, the more accurate the device will be. A high-quality marine navigation system will use all 24 of the satellites in the GPS system.

2. How Large is the Screen?

A larger screen makes a huge difference in being able to clearly read the maps and coordinates displayed on the screen. Some systems even read the layout of the ocean or lake bed so that boaters know where all of the rocks and shallow areas are. In order to be able to clearly see everything, a larger screen is needed.

3. Is the Marine GPS Unit Portable?

The devices are available as either handheld units or larger marine GPS receivers. The handheld is smaller and more compact, making it easier to carry around. However, because of the size, the handheld ones have reduced mapping capabilities as well as a small screen. The GPS receivers are larger with more features and a bigger screen. The units are still removable and can be placed inside a vehicle when not being used on a boat.

4. Can the Marine GPS Unit Connect to a Computer?

GPS systems can save information like the routes taken, maps, or waypoints. In addition to this, sometimes extra maps can be downloaded or purchased. In order to get access to information or add more on, the GPS needs to be able to connect to a computer either through a cord or an SD card.

5. Does the Marine GPS Unit Have a Port for an Antenna?

A lot of marine GPSs have built-in, internal antennas. These are more compact but their reception is not as good. Either look for a unit that comes with an external antenna, or get one that has a port so that an external antenna can be added. The extra reception allows for faster, more accurate mapping and weather forecasts.

6. What Safety Features Does the Marine GPS Unit Have?

GPS units should have several ways to protect boaters from catastrophe. Refer to the chart below for a list of safety features and their descriptions.

Outboard Accessories

Outboard Accessories and Equipment. The two most important factors to understand about jetboat performance are bottom width and the weight- to-power requirements for bringing the craft on plane. These fundamentals are derived from physical laws of water displacement and force.
If you view these ideas with accesorios nauticos online an open mind and are willing to set aside some of the unquestionable ideas you may have heard, you may learn something new in enhancing the performance of your outboard jet, as I have learned in gathering this information.
Cavitation problems
Outboard jets work best on flat-bottomed boats with a bottom width of 48 inches or more. This is a frequently used axiom, and has led to a lot of misconceptions. The shape of the hull cannot be easily defined. Fact is, when it comes to bottom width, the wider the bottom, the more water it displaces. Because a shallow draft is important, the wider the boat, the better the draft. A wider hull sits higher in the water, so it exhibits less drag when jumping on plane. Conclusion: Wider is better.
The rest of this statement, however, is not entirely true, even if the vast majority of the boats I see on Pennsylvania rivers are flat-bottomed boats. The shape of the hull helps direct the flow of water. Flat hulls tend to cause more cavitation.
It doesn’t matter which outboard you purchased, if it has a jet attached to the lower unit, it was manufactured by Outboard Jet, a division of Specialty Manufacturing. Outboard Jet publishes a guideline for selecting a boat powered by an outboard jet. The company suggests that a boat hull offering a slight deadrise (6 to 10 degrees) increases the overall performance. The hull maneuvers better and cavitates less than a flat-bottomed boat.
Many aluminum hull manufacturers have introduced a whole new line of extra-wide modified john boats that offer a consistent line of 4 to 6 degrees of deadrise from bow to transom. It is important that the deadrise falls all along the hull because the “V” provides a smoother ride and splits off air-filled water before it reaches the jet intake.

Marine Motor Oil and Lubricants

Marine Motor Oil and Lubricants. Boat Engine Accessories from TheBoatOnlineStore.com
Article:
Lubricating oil for a marine diesel engine achieves two objectives; it must cool and lubricate.
The oil is taken from the drain tank usually underneath the engine by a screw type pump. It is cooled,  filtered and supplied to the engine via the oil inlet pipe or inlet rail at a pressure of about 4 bar. On a medium speed 4 stroke engine the oil is supplied to the main bearings through drillings in the engine frame to the crankshaft main bearings. Drillings in the crankshaft then take the oil to the crankpin or bottom end bearings. The oil is then led up the connecting rod to the piston or gudgeon pin and from there to the piston cooling before returning to the crankcase.
il is also supplied to lubricate the rocker gear Tienda Nautica Online operating the inlet and exhaust valves, and to the camshaft and camshaft drive.
The oil then drains from the crankcase into the drain tank or sump.
The oil in the drain tank is being constantly circulated through a centrifugal purifier. This is to remove any water and products of combustion plus any foreign particles which may be in the oil.
The cylinder liner must be lubricated as well. This is so there will be a film of oil between the piston rings and the liner and also so that any acid produced by combustion of the fuel is neutralised by the oil and does not cause corrosion. Some of this lubrication will be supplied by so called “splash lubrication” which is the oil splashed up into the liner by the rotating crankshaft. However larger medium speed marine diesel engines also use separate pumps to supply oil under pressure to the cylinder liner. The oil is led through drillings onto the liner surface where grooves distribute it circumferentially around the liner, and the piston rings spread it up and down the surface of the liner.
A pre lub pump is sometimes fitted especially to engines where the main pump is engine driven. This pump is electrically driven and circulates oil around the engine prior to starting.
On a two stroke crosshead engine lubricating oil is supplied to the main bearings and camshaft and camshaft drive. A separate supply is led via a swinging arm or a telescopic pipe to the crosshead where some of it is diverted to cool the piston (travelling up and back through the piston rod), whilst some is used to lubricate the crosshead and guides, and the rest led down a drilling in the connecting rod to the bottom end or crankpin bearing. Oil is also used to operate the hydraulic exhaust valves.
On some engines, the oil supply to the crosshead bearing is boosted in pressure to about 12 bar by a second set of pumps. This oil  is also used to operate the hydraulic reversing gear for the engine.
The cylinder liners on a two stroke engine are lubricated using separate injection pumps which use a different specification of oil. The oil which is led to drillings in the liner is able to deal with the acids produced by the burning of high  sulphur fuels.

Boat Cleats for Docking and mooring

Boat Cleats for Docking and mooring

Boat Cleats for Docking and mooring. The usefulness of mooring cleats fore and aft is pretty clear to any sailor. But the mid-ship cleat may be more useful than you realize. Brief stops alongside are surprisingly common. Whether you are embarking or disembarking guests, taking on supplies or for some other reason, the ability to tie alongside a dock simply and securely for short periods, with as little fuss as possible can be a valuable skill.
The method is simplicity itself if your midship cleats are properly positioned. A single spring line leading from the cleat somewhere aft of the maximum beam to a cleat on the dock somewhere near the transom when combined with an engine idling in forward and the helm turned toward the dock will hold your boat in a fixed stable position parallel to the dock.
I am afraid that last sentence makes it sound more complicated than it is.
The mechanics are really quite simple. The engine idling in gear and the helm turned toward the dock are trying to drive the boat slowly forward and turn the bow into the dock. The spring line keeps the boat from going forward and, when properly positioned balances the sterns effort to move away from the dock. Essentially the engine simply presses the hull against the dock at it’s greatest beam.
The secret to making this work is the positioning of the midship cleat and the length of the spring line. If your boat has sheet block tracks on the gunwale you can use a sliding track-mounted mooring cleat. A little testing will soon have the cleat in exactly the right spot and the spring at exactly the right length.
This technique can be very useful when sailing short handed as well. Having a properly positioned cleat and a spring line marked at the right length I could motor our 40 footer up to a dock, loop a cleat, set the helm over and step off. The boat would sit quiet and secure while I casually set our standard fore and aft mooring and spring lines. As well as being useful it is a slightly impressive bit of seamanship.
